Infoblox encountered an issue with the DNS service not starting after an upgrade to NIOS 8.4.5
Problem Summary
Recently, Infoblox encountered an issue with Infoblox grid members not starting DNS service right after upgrading to NIOS 8.4.5 code release. The indicators for the DNS service failure are:
Customer Environment
Customers using Infoblox NIOS product as DNS server(s) with authoritative zones which contain multiple Named Access Control Lists (ACL).
Affected Versions
NIOS 8.4.5
Resolution
The reported behavior with Infoblox DNS member(s) not starting DNS service after upgrading to 8.4.5 has been identified as a software defect NIOS-72797. This defect is exposed only in NIOS 8.4.5 code release.
The software defect may be exposed only when authoritative zones are defined and associated with multiple Named ACL. The result is the DNS configuration file missing important part of this Named ACL declaration which causes the DNS service not to start.
A potential workaround to fix the issue with the DNS service not starting, is to remove the multiple Named ACLs associated with the authoritative zones and recreate them back again.
However, Infoblox recognizes this work around may take time to complete which may not be acceptable for our customers.
Infoblox' Engineering team is currently working on identifying the trigger that causes the Named ACLs declaration to be incorrectly written in the new, post-upgrade NIOS 8.4.5 code. As soon as the root cause is identified, a fix will be prepared and incorporated in a new patch.
At present 8.4.5 is not available for download from Infoblox support portal, For those who have already upgraded, please contact our support team if you experience any issues with DNS service.
Axians Advised Software Version
At the moment of this writing the advised version for NIOS would be 8.3.6
